NGO Coalition appeals water use licence granted to CoAL

The coalition of civil society organisations that has opposed the proposed Vele colliery of Limpopo Coal Company (Pty) Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Australian mining company Coal of Africa Limited, will today lodge an appeal with the Water Tribunal against the water use licence granted to Limpopo Coal for its proposed Vele colliery by the Acting Director-General of the Department of Water Affairs (DWA), Mr Trevor Balzer, on 29 March 2011.

The Department of Environmental Affairs can confirm that on Thursday, 05 August 2010, its Environmental Management Inspectorate (Green Scorpions) issued a compliance notice to Coal of Africa to cease with activities that are in contravention of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA).

Fight to save the Mapungubwe World Heritage site intensifies

The fight to protect the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape from coal mining heated up this week with the submission of an appeal against the mine by some of the leading non¬governmental organisations in South Africa. Australian company Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) was recently given the go ahead to begin construction of an opencast and underground coal mine within less than 6km from the borders of the Mapungubwe National Park and adjacent to the World Heritage Site, with the approval of the Environmental Management Plan for the proposed Vele Colliery.
